“Slave To Love”
I had the pleasure of seeing “Little Jimmy Scott” back in ’94 and I must say I’ve never ever seen a person so devoted to music before or after. His story is a simple one and a common one as well. Super talent and emotion ignored by the frivolous pop music scene, then eventually seen as a novelty and finally noticed for his high emotion and talent. How often do you get to sit at a table, somewhat ‘eye to eye’ with such a great talent and performer. I got to say, at the time, I didn’t feel worthy of calling myself a musician after being in his presence. It really was a ‘waynes world’ kinda thing. I must say that my favorite LP is still the 1st one I heard which was his big comeback album in ’92 “All The Way.”(produced super slick by Tommy Lipuma who was Capitol’s house man for years. This guy did all these psychedelic “Claudine Longet” arrangements back in the sixties that I love so much)
Enjoy your Sunday.

wonderful.
the dr. awhile back put up a song of his, perhaps from this same performance, and commented on an ‘otherness’ this man seems to inhabit. certainly that voice is from somewhere else. it ain’t earthbound that’s for sure.
Absolutely! Being in his presence was ‘otherworldly’.
Kinda freaky in a way, but pure genius of emotion.
His story seems sad as an ignored singer to elevator operator to bellhop back to a somewhat stardom. He certainly fits the look of the other careers as well.
I’d cast him as a bellhop!
as for casting..consider “the Gods Must Be Crazy”..only in a meaninful context.
Top lp..or a close second..”Heaven”from 97′ or so, with the all time version of the title track, and a classic “Sorry seems to be the hardest word..”.
Also much thanks to Lou Reed for introducing Jimmy Scott to a group of people who had no clue..like me..by including and featuring him on the “Magic and Loss” lp!
