surrealiistic sunday..Maya Deren; “Meshes of the Afternoon” part 1

much has been written about Maya Deren..filmmaker, choreographer, poet, writer,Surrealist, and Authority on the Haitian religion of Voodun..

her circle included the likes of Andre Breton, Anais Nin, John Cage, and Marcel Duchamp (with whom she made an “unfinished’ film ; the “Witches Cradle” in 1943.

I will say that for me this film, made in a paranoid, wartime L.A.(also) in 1943 ,with a 16mm Bolex..comes as close as possible to the dream Experience..in which scenes are experienced first hand, related in some mysterious way..yet clipped together in a language yet unknown and perhaps beyond definition.

She said it best as follows:

“and what more could i possibly ask as an artist, than your most precious visions, however rare, assume sometimes the forms of my images..”
