Obama V. McCain – 6pm PST liveblog

  • 5:54 PST – Looks like this may be a solo venture to start. Prediction: McCain loses. jc
  • 6:03 PST – Tom Brokaw better not lay down. Will McCain acknowledge Obama’s existence in this one? jc
  • 6:07 PST – McCains first answer…Economy question, “This is about Energy Indepencene”. He pullin’ a Palin! ic
  • 6:13 PST – Tom B, running a tight ship, “no yammering on fellas”, good for him. jc
  • 6:15 PST – They’re throwing some punches. Obama’s not holding back on McCain’s deregulation past. I like it. ic
  • 6:19 PST – and he brought up McCain’s Freddie Mac lobbyist Davis. nice. jc
  • 6:23 PST – McCain likes to get REAL close up to that audience. McCain attack: Obama pays for overhead projectors. jc
  • 6:30 PST – McCain: my priorities are “everything at once”. this guy can’t even use a computer. Obama at least listed. Tom keeps getting peeved on them going over their time. good luck Tom, these guys are senators. jc
  • 6:32 PST – McCain: “We’re not Rifel Shots, We’re Americans.” Indeed. ic
  • 6:36 PST – McCain keeps getting up from his chair when Obama’s speaking. I think McCain is seeing gremlins on his chair. Also…who still eats Jello? ic
  • 6:41 PST – McCain just lies about about Obama raising taxes. Obama’s explaining his tax cuts for the hundreth time. drill it into his old thick skull! jc
  • 6:46 PST – McCain’s answer to climate change: nuclear power plants. that shit ain’t “green”. jc
  • 6:51 PST – McCain want’s nuclear real bad. Ok, fine. Can we store the waste on the lawn of your 10 homes? ic
  • 6:52 PST – Tom’s still annoyed. just throw the traffic lights out. anyone notice there’s an old man wandering around the red carpet while Obama speaks? jc
  • 7:00 PST – Obama’s talking WAAAAY too long. punch it up B. jc
  • 7:01 PST – Brokaw is saying they both are going over the time limit….but he’s only cutting off Obama. ic
  • 7:05 PST – nice on turning the “he doesn’t understand” on its head. i don’t understand why we invaded Iraq either. jc
  • 7:19 PST – Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran! it was just a joke. McCain will use telepathy to catch Osama, how else would he be so certain? McCain: Petraeus is GOD. jc
  • 7:31 PST – this debate’s a wash. the format suits McCain good, but Obama is fine with it as well. McCain needed a ‘knock-out” and he didn’t get it. nice Zen question at the end. neither one really answered it. McCain: what i don’t know… the future. i beg to differ senator, you said you’d get Osama for certain. jc
  • 7:41 PST – Agree, pretty much a wash.  McCain defintiely needed a big win and didn’t get it.  McCain wanted to get dirty, but Obama is just too calm and relax to fall for it.  I disagree about the last question…I thought it was more Existential than zen.  Maybe because they didn’t answers it mean that they actually answered it. ic
  • 8:00 PST – you just blew my f#@%ing mind. jc

*Also, a post-debate win for Obama staying on stage and shaking hands/taking pictures. he looked good, McCain looked absent. jc

I think it was pretty much a draw too..

JC gets major points for his wry, populist commentary..”anyone notice theres
an old man wandering around the red carpet while Obama speaks..?”

however, IC damn near delivered a knockout punch with the “it’s more Existential than Zen..maybe because they didn’t answer it means they actually answered it..”.

That one clearly threw his opponent off guard..:”you just blew my f…ing mind”, and scored big with all the French Nihilists in the audience.

Nice one boys..oh yeah about the other guys…

I think it’s over for Mc Cain..to me he looked damn near doddering at times..certainly angry and disdainful..”that one..”and a bit frantic in his appeal as a “reformer”.

Obama was clearly more on target..appeared calm and gave more thoughtful, nuanced answers..

Mc Cain absolutely needs a knock out punch now..Obama only needs to be himself.

    We shall see.

Obama is ALL about nuance,if that’s what you like.I find him very confusing-he’s one of these smoove types that talks around the issues with his nuance.

Obama’s tax and health care plans just blow McCain’s out of the water. He needs to win this, I can’t grind out another 4 long years of the status qo, especially with miss “you betcha” around.

I fear for small business people who will have their taxes raised by Obama, he says that he will raise taxes on businesses who make over 250,000.

99% of small business in America will get tax cuts under Obama’s plan. McCain was booed 3 times during his speech at a small business conference.

at what point does a small business become ‘not a small’ business? making over 250,000 is well beyond the threshold of ‘small’ business i would say.

i think in the debate obama said something like 95% would get tax cuts. i can tell you that will help out surfboard manufacturers. maybe not CI though.

    my friends..

    regarding “nuance”,

    here’s another big word:

    ‘obscurantism’..

meaning:”opposition to the increase and spread of knowledge’..or “the deliberate evasion of clarity”.

given most people don’t support Mc Cain on the real issues that matter.. his presentation of himself as an agent of change or integrity, and truly.. his vision of reality..

    (for overwhelminly good reasons..).

this is what it’s come down to for the Republicans to stay in power:

    3 approaches ..all in concert:

    * wildly negative, unsubstantiated, vile ,and unverifiable character attacks
    * racist attack and innuendo.. both overt, and covert, and don’t forget:
    *electoral fraud.

    remember,it’s worked before.

Herr Goerbells is clapping from his grave.

This end of campaign negative push from Mc Cain is is going to make Nixon’s/George Wallaces 68′..not to mention W’s .. campaigns look..parochial.

In this instance, electoral difference can only come from “new” voters..
young people.minorities..independents..they really need to come out and make a change happen.

    Stay informed..and yes..vote.
