The Shopocalypse
by Jacob on 30. Nov, 2008 in economy, film
November 2007 saw the release of the film What Would Jesus Buy? which satirically focused on the commercialization of Christmas and materialism at large. The film stars activist/performance artist Bill Talen, who goes by the alias of “Reverend Billy,” and his troupe of activists, whose street theater performances take the form of a church choir [...]
“Keeping Quiet”…Pablo Neruda
by Dr. Robert on 27. Nov, 2008 in poetry
a Thanksgiving Day Prayer ..to us all. KEEPING QUIET Now we will count to twelve and we will all keep still For once on the face of the earth let’s not speak in any language, let’s stop for one second, and not move our arms so much. It would be an exotic moment without rush, [...]

America can’t read
by Ian on 19. Nov, 2008 in general
From the always sharp Chris Hedges, we are reminded that in this time of incredible technological advancments, America’s doesn’t even know how to read: There are over 42 million American adults, 20 percent of whom hold high school diplomas, who cannot read, as well as the 50 million who read at a fourth- or fifth-grade [...]
Mel Torme..”I’m Coming Home”..
by Dr. Robert on 15. Nov, 2008 in general
strange but very cool stuff from Mel Torme..1963.. inspired by Warm Jets post of ..Nancy Sinatra’s version of “Bang Bang”.. on the Cabinessence blog.. . it reminded me what an awkward time this was for the Pop oligarchy at that point.. the Beatles had killed em..Dylan was going ape shit.. the Brits were almost single [...]
R.I.P. Mitch Mitchell
by Jacob on 12. Nov, 2008 in music, peace
Sad news… Mitch Mitchell passed away earlier today in Portland. He was drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, you may have heard of them. My whole love affair with music basically started with this band and their albums. What a gift he left behind… still unsurpassed in terms of impact and longevity.
Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story
by Jacob on 11. Nov, 2008 in politics
Tonight at 9pm on Frontline: In the wake of yet another hard-fought and bitter presidential campaign, FRONTLINE presents a spirited and revealing biography of Lee Atwater, the charming, Machiavellian godfather of modern take-no-prisoners Republican political campaigns. Through eye-opening interviews with Atwater’s closest friends and adversaries, the film explores the life of the controversial political operative [...]
Sunday Morning with Archie Roach..”a child was born..”
by Dr. Robert on 09. Nov, 2008 in general
Easily one of my favorite artists..stumbled across hid 2nd LP..”Jamu Dreaming”..in the mid nineties and have never looked back.. A powerful singer songwriter..spokesman for his Australian Aboriginal people..his songs have helped crystallize conciousness and awareness for so many Australians..black and white. This particular song is from “Looking for Butterboy”..which features a duet with his partner..Ruby [...]
Fire On Fire
by Jacob on 08. Nov, 2008 in live, music
Upon Maria’s request… something completely different. With a soberer celebratory spirit, Fire On Fire bestows upon thee a back porch performance… with lightening! Their bio says they come from Maine, live together in a big blue house, and play simply for the enjoyment of playing. Makes sense to me. Described by Michael Gira as “a [...]
