For the most part every surfer I’ve ever met is a complete Philistine.
Nice to see a writer mentioned on this blog.
I was turned on to this a while ago by a persistent anonymous emailer that said read this! I thought it was spam. I HIGHLY recommend this book for all surfers over a certain age that can read.

Actually JW, damn near everybody I meet is a Philistine.
Took me a while to realize that this is, in fact, their planet..
They live ,and breed here..and,
I’m just a tourist, taking some photos and sending postcards, slowly passing through
But hey..the book you mentioned is called “Breath” by Tim Winton.
My wife and I been reading his stuff since about 83′ when we were living in Perth W.A.
He is probably the most highly regarded Australian author living..and he grew up surfing, diving, fishing and leading a coastal life on the western edge of the Australian continent.
“Breath” is,almost..THE definitive surfing oriented novel..the man knows of which he speaks, and I’ll second your recommendation.
He has written about 20 novels etc,
“Cloudstreet” is probably his best known..”Dirt Music” and “The Riders” among my favorites.
If you can find it..he did a series of essays coupled with great photographs of W.A. called “Lands Edge” in 93′..
that one truly tells the tale of what it’s like to have the coast and ocean flowing through your blood..
for life.
Thanks for the tip Dr. Robert, I’ll try to find the essays. I recently read ” Dirt Music” and also liked it a lot. The guy can definitely write.
