Dueling Turntables: The Campbell Brothers
Jan 25th, 2008 by jacob
I’ve been sitting on this one for awhile, its awesomeness never abating. This here’s the Campbell Brothers, a gospel guitar group making the case for not skipping church on Sundays. Brother Chuck (pedal steel) leads the charge, with rhythm duties tied down by brother Phil (guitar) and his son Carlton (drums)… Carlton Campbell.
About half way through you’ll find a big woman in green, perhaps Shirley Q. Liquor, really feeling that holy spirit. And boy with these licks who wouldn’t? I cannot stop smiling watching this woman dance.
Duncan, I think we’ve found the house band for the next Bonzer Front party.

I had the pleasure of seeing the Campbell Brothers in a ‘workshop’ at the Vancouver Island music festival last year with fellow hosts Jerry Douglas, Sonny Landreth, and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (and his son). Naturally, the workshop was titled ‘Slide Rulers.’ It was fantastic seeing all those guys with there similar tools and vastly different approaches to music come together and jam.
Ego didn’t get in the way, which was nice for a big-name jam. But then, how could you have ego when each was so exhilirated by the others approach. For me though, when the Bhatt clan’s turn came to add their bit to the shuffle after waiting patiently for the first 10 minutes of music making, they just stole the show with their odd-timing, quartertone approach to blues/gospel sound. Many in the crowd had never heard anything like it, although it was simply an improvisation on something familiar to most everyone.
You could see the Campbell Brothers catching glances with Jerry Douglas in the middle of the Bhatt improv with looks of astonishment…
Deffinitely a religious experience for some of the lucky ones there.. Not as much for the virtuosity (which was a given), but for the openess and sharing of the musicians. I deffinitely gained much respect for this duo of Campbell Brothers too. Great show…
I’ve been a regular lurker on here for some time now, but I have a feeling I’ll be compelled to join in on the discussion a bit more. I’m always pleasantly surprised by the like-mindedness that comes from these pages. Cheers, Matt W

Reminds me of the Bonzer Front grand opening party. Or maybe it was all the Clan Campbell whisky I drank. Either way those Campbell Bro’s rule.

Really Cool clip. I just wanted to say I like your blog a lot and especially the healthy discourse on the political issues.
Take care.
