Nader has done some incredible work in his lifetime, but I think just fundamentally misunderstands the political climate we’re in right now. He hasn’t figured out a way to work in todays political system. Until he does, he will unfortunately continue to be irrelevant.
nader’s whole thing though is that todays political system is a completely broken one, one which only continues to serve a corporate agenda and not the peoples. do you think obama genuinely represents a break from that or is he just a surface correction? i’d like to think the former, but, as nader has expounded upon endlessly, the system is so deeply flawed there cannot be a revolution from the inside. you will only get variations of the same mistake. perhaps obama is an incremental step in the right direction. and if so, that in itself is something to be excited about.
I don’t want to get all Holy Obama, but what he’s done in this campaign is absolutely incredible. To complement his 1.5 million donors, for the general election he is training 1 million volunteers to do voter outreach. These mostly progressive people are going to now have invaluable experience working and running a campaign for the rest of their lives. This type of step is almost worth the price of admission.
And I do genuinely fell Obama represents a break from what we’ve had (Bush, Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Reagan, Carter, Nixon). By taking out Hillary, he has also taken over the party from the Clintons and their people. This is his party now. I don’t think he’ll take it in as a progressive way as we’d all like it, but I do believe we are entering a new era of politics.
With Obama will come even larger majorities in the House and Senate, thus not having to deal with Bush Dog Democrats (voting to fund the war and for Telecom amnesty)
Here are two quotes of what I feel Obama best represents and can be.
“I don’t want to just end the war, but I want to end the mind-set that got us into war in the first place.”- Barack Obama
“The votes hadn’t even been counted in November [2006] before we heard reports that corporations were already recruiting lobbyists with Democratic connections to carry their water in the next Congress. That’s why it’s not enough to just change the players. We have to change the game…The truth is, we cannot change the way Washington works unless we first change the way Congress works.”- Barack Obama
ok lets say he is going to try to move in a progressive direction i.e. stop the war, behave in a civil manner to other countries, stop the erosion of civil rights and the development of a police state.
Who in power is even going to support him? Not to even mention stick their leadership neck out for him?
Is the best we can hope for, Pelosi running out from under a corporate rock -finally. And if any demo wants to take progressive action why have no criminal hearings or investigations or legislation been pushed they head all the commitees. Why are the demos scared or are they just not interested. This is a lame duck president with a 70% disapproval rating who snubs his nose at congress on anything they say??????
Off the table by who? I don’t believe Pelosi is strong enough to make that call. I think the demo party is just the corporate status quo party especially since clinton. And that image is McCain’s greatest ally.
If this is so, that apathy is not going to change if Obama gets elected.
yeah beetle, just good ol’ fashion reverse racism… that’s how i cast my vote. it’s like abortion and gay people for you guys, right? yep, me and the 1 million volunteers ian spoke of.
never mind the war, healthcare, the economy or environment. “we’s gots to make ‘dem scary black peoples less mad at us.”
————————————————————
i agree with you bb in that the congress will need to step up with mas huevos if anything is to really change. the bigger story this fall will hopefully be the seats gained in congress by dems very much in line with the “obama MO”, if indeed such an MO exists.
My hopes are high. But not specifically for Obama. He is just a stepping stone. The future of our country and the planet are a lot better then they were on November 3rd, 2004.
JR-I think most people like people that are like themselves. Isn’t that human nature? Whites with whites, blacks with blacks,Mexicans with Mexicans,Asians etc. That’s a choice they make to be with their own tribe.
beetle, if that’s the case, then why after all this time have we decided to switch it up? I’m not disagreeing with your last statement by the way. I think you’re on to something. But still, AA are only 12% of the population.
————-
My theory - changing demographics. It’s a non-white and/or non-Christian coalition that the Democratic party has now formed into.
What’s the fastest growing ethnicity in our country - non white
What’s the fastest growing religion - no affiliation (which doesn’t mean no religion, just means they don’t identify with a particular one)
Because these two large demographic groups are on the rise and because they both have coalesced in the Democratic party, and republicans have been trying to get as Christian and White as possible, from a strictly data point, I feel good about the trajectory of our country.
that is a point beetle. but that fact that it’s human nature, does that make it right? or realistic? look at our world, our country today. what good does it serve to further hold on to these surface divisions, when we’re so obviously evolving into a much more homogenized society? that may be a clouded statement coming from a life-long coastal state dweller, but still, things are rolling onward…
I think divisions that occur naturally (human nature)are ok. It’s maybe not the ideal, but I don’t think it is always malicious or racist. I think about Little Saigon or Santa Ana or Westside. People want to live with people that have the same culture as they do.
I agree with Jacob on the “human nature” comment.
Beetle, you make it sound like an excuse for your own white guilt by calling it that, like it’s OK?
The divisions do occur. Partly naturally, partly cuz of fear and yes the R word.
To accept each other co mingling must happen and does very much in bigger cities. Obama is a catalyst for people accepting people.
Funny thing for me is Obama has taken me beyond even thinking of his color!
And I’m sure i’ve racist in me somewhere.
He’s simply THEE best candidate we’ve had in Quite a while.
Oh and your “guilt over slavery” comment is ridiculous and juvenile.
You being a teacher should know better than that.
I agree that Obo is bringing people together on the “hope” deal, and also agree that his color is not an issue. If you believe in him go for it. I won’t vote for for Mr.O because I think he is not experienced enough and leans more socialist, that’s all.I know the guilt over slavery is a generalization, however,I do think liberal elites tend to coddle people like they are babies. Dude, it’s like slavery ended 140 years ago! The elites can then exert control over the babies and define their own superiority at the same time. (just like the plantation)
ok- would someone please explain to me what is implied when some people use the term ‘elitist’? The americans who like this term usually use it with the word liberal- why?
Do they just not like liberals or people who are elitist? Or are only liberals that are elitist or all of the above disparaged?
How about a good example of the a liberal elitist, please. Name one please-
I have not heard W( born w/ a gold spoon in his mouth) referred to as an elitisit or Condi(big time Stanford professor) or Chenney CEO or Scalia …
The elites think they know what is best (for all of us)and have little regard for the freedom of the individual. My top ten Elitists:
1.People from Hollyweed (body image types too.)
2.Anyone from the Bay Area
3.Most environmental extremists
4.Health food tyrants
5.Second hand smoke paranoid types
6.Music snobs
7.Art snobs
8.Religious elites
9.Most University profs-(except business profs)
10. All democrats :)
From your list it seems everywhere you turn you would see one of them. Must be rather unpleasant with that view; I don’t see how anyone on that list can claim superiority over anyone and not get laughed at.
Anyway all will be right, if you come try some sweet seaweed gruel at this very private art gallery in SOMA I frequent with my guru/ gender studies prof. I know you will find her/him such a hoot. The curator is very discerning with the tunes and we can eat w/ our hands to save a tree while we ponder our inner beauty. I am sure you’ll just love it!
1. people who deliberately propagate false information to sell a war (re: neoconservatives)
2. social Darwinists (re: hardcore Libertarians)
3. anyone who purports to have a closer relationship with God than you do.
oh i’m sure there’s many more, but those three do stand out.

guilt over slavery

The capitalist white man just about obliterated the indigenous American Indian off the planet earth.
I suppose the American Indian is irrelevant.
Obama will disappoint you. I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

Why?
Because they’re racists.
