WALL-E

I went and saw this film the day it came out, on a lark really. I had been outside the US the previous month and consequently missed any marketing of the film. But it looked neat, I enjoy animation, and had time to kill… the perfect storm.

And what a film it was. I won’t extemporize like many already have on the film’s outstanding visuals and robotic love story. More interesting I felt was the so called “message” the film carried, and in the subsequent weeks the critical fallout from bloggers on the right. Apparently to many, WALL-E is just left-wing anti-capitalist propaganda meant to brain wash children into caring about the environment. Ah shucks.

Well, like most good films, WALL-E’s a classic Rorschach test. You can see what you want in it. Is it the perils of technological dependency and consumerism? An Adam and Eve love story? A celebration of individual dependence? An animated version of Idiocracy?

I wouldn’t say it’s art, but it approaches the capacity art has to shake up human consciousness. That in itself I consider an accomplishment for a summer movie. If you haven’t, go see the thing!

Wall-E totally looks like the robot from “Short Circuit”… minus the cheesy 80’s style of course
