Biden v. Palin - Live Blog - 6pm PST
Oct 2nd, 2008 by Ian
No, Sarah Palin didn’t forget about her own Supreme Court case….
We’re going to be “Live Blogging” the debate here at Transafixion tonight. Don’t really know what to expect. Stay tuned…
- 5:55 PST T-minus 5 minutes. she still has time to bail out. jc
- 5:57 PST - What if Palin wears a pant suit? ic
- 6:04 PST - “can i call you joe?”… classic. jc
- 6:06 PST - Well…she won the flag pin debate. ic
- 6:11 PST - Gwen’s gonna run a tight ship, hopefully she allows some back and forth. jc
- 6:14 PST - She’s hanging in there so far. Playin up that accent real good. ic
- 6:16 PST - There you go Biden. Focusing it back on (de)regulation. calling her out for not answering for their record. ic
- 6:18 PST - Palin only wants to have the debate she studied for. taxes, taxes, taxes. jc
- 6:21 PST - Haha…Biden is also answering Palin’s questions. ic
- 6:28 PST - Gwen’s got to call her on not answering questions. jc
- 6:32 PST - Listening to Palin, it’s sounds like everyone wants to be a liberal now. Wall Street Greed, Alternative Energy, health care for all… ic
- 6:36 PST - This format is great for Palin. She can use all her studied lines and never really have to get too specific on her arguments. “And do you support ‘Cap & Trade’?” Doesn’t answer it all and then Gwen follows up and asks it again and her one word answer is… “yes”. What a joke. Good for her though. ic
- 6:40 PST - If Palin feels she has to say she’s tolerant, she probably isn’t. jc
- 6:45 PST - Biden going off about Iraq. I just wish the segments were longer. The pace and rapid change of subject just don’t feel right, especially after the obama/mccain debate. ic
- 6:49 PST - Does she know that the people who watched the last debate are watching this one? Repeating the lie that Obama will meet with Iran without preconditions is old news, Palin. am
- 6:53 PST - Nix the 3rd person, Joe Biden. am
- 6:58 PST - this isn’t a debate, it’s an interview of two people. oh she said maverick again. jc
- 7:02 PST - Boooooorrrrrrriiiinnnnnnnnggg. Seriously, spot on with calling this an interview. But it’s worse than an interview because they only have to fill 2 minutes of space and no prying questions. There isn’t any real debate because they just go to their canned lines for the given subject. I think this is going to be a wash. ic
- 7:04 PST - Palin can’t see africa from alaska. jc
- 7:09 PST - TEAM MAVERICK!!! ic
- 7:13 PST - There you go again Joe! wow, Joe goes to Home Depot, she says “Dag Nab it”… this is a Folksiness off! jc
- 7:24 PST - what’s the “maverick” count up to? did you see joe almost choke up talking about his kid… emotional take-down on Palin. Now Joe attacks on the maverick BS, Go Joe! finally… jc
- 7:35 PST - Palin is SO STOKED it’s over. final verdict: Biden beats the broken record. jc
- 7:45 PST - It was like going back to Disnyland and realizing the rides are actually whimpy. Biden hit some actual emotional points, while Palin was obviously coached, she did hit the notes she was supposed to. But really, it was pretty clear all her lines were canned. Overall, Biden was obviously more coherent.
Right now, Buchanan is saying she needs to get back out there and finally start answering questions…..God I hope so. This is just like after the RNC convention…she had a great delivery, but it was all canned. Any real life conversation she’s still screwed. ic

if anyone’s watching cnn, these analyst scorecards are just ridiculous…
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:27 pm
just checked it out…..that’s funny oriana! I’m glad I’ve stuck with PBS
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:29 pm
I’m so tired of the right saying that we’re surrendering by leaving IraQ.
I thought we already won.
The “white flag of surrender” comment holds major juice so the left MUST
let it be known that we are not losing by leaving.
The whole win/ lose thing, at this point, is so ridiculous anyway.
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Palin kicked Slowjoe’s butt, especially using his own quotes against him. I especially liked that said she liked being able to speak directly to the public instead of going through the filter of Bozos like katie couric, keithee, and rachel (air head) muddow. Ps When does Gwen’s book about Obama come out?! OMG
October 2nd, 2008 at 7:01 pm
OMG! OMG! OMG! Gwen wrote a book about black politicians! OMG! OMG! Gwen is ALSO an african-american. She was such in the tank for Obama. I can’t believe all those followups she gave to Palin for dodging the questions and going back to her canned lines…..

October 2nd, 2008 at 7:17 pm
really beetle? gwen was pailn’s best ally up there. she let her dodge for days. it just goes to show you that throwing a hissy fit about nothing can do wonders. i bet you’re proud.
but please, biden leveled every claim back at palin, no problem, then went ahead and explained details. palin answered for nothing, when pressed she just pivoted and went on another pat diatribe about “being Mavericks” and “working for the people”. honky please…
note to palin and mccain: calling yourself a maverick doesn’t make you one. it just looks forced.
in the end, palin didn’t set the podium on fire and thus beat expectations… you go girl!
October 2nd, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Again. Nothing new from you beetle. All canned as usual.
You’ve got to agree Biden was actually more Presidential than any of ‘em yet so far, yet he realizes his position as an adviser and is comfortable that he will play a huge part.
He was so in control the whole time and as Maddow said was true,” she was basically a cartoon of herself”.
Oh she’s such a ‘Main st’ girl.
Please.
I’ll admit that the right with blinders on thought she was great basically cuz she ‘dittoed’ her presence from the convention and that makes you all love her the same way, with the same lines and cliches…again.
She’s just too damn psyched all the time.
Stepford VP???
October 2nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Yikes, that was a lot of ranting and babbling nonsense from the dilettante Palin, all she needed was her beauty queen sash. The kool-aid drinkers couldn’t be happier. Only in America could you win a debate by not answering any of the questions. A chill went down my spine when she barked that she wants to change the constitution to give the VP more power. You betcha’ America!
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Palin doesn’t need to answer the questions of the chattering classes and the Oberman wannabees, she just needs to speak to the people, they know what she’s about . As far as dodging questions-Slowjoe Biden supported the war before he didn’t , (and that evil Dick Cheney) blah blah-same ol’ demo double talk we’re so familar with, most people see through it though.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:32 pm
no, no, no… often times she didn’t answer the moderators questions. and gwen iffle was the moderator, from pbs, not exactly a fire starter from the ‘chattering class’. she went incredibly easy on both of them tonight.
this whole notion that palin just needs to speak directly to the people, i ask you, to what people? she can just address those already in the tank for her at rehearsed stump speeches, but how effective a strategy is that? to reach folks you need to possibly sway, you kinda have to do interviews with those of the ‘chattering class’, or at least hold a press conference. the ‘filters’ equal access to mass audiences to make your case.
and dude, if most people saw through the supposed demo double talk they wouldn’t be leading in the polls like they are right now.
October 3rd, 2008 at 2:32 am
Palin is clearly qualified to manage a Home Depot in Juno and that’s debatable.
George Bush has been speaking to the people in plain talk and look where that’s got us Beetle? 1 million Iaraqis civilians dead http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/iraq/iraqdeaths.html not to mention the American soldiers who had their short lives ended because of George Bush straight talk and lies. And where the Fuck was the straight talk in New Orleans. George Bush has a 25% approval rating. Why would we want more. He is an utter American failure in the largest sense.
Beetle, I understand that you are a teacher? I do pray it’s something like Auto mechanics and not home economics.
October 3rd, 2008 at 5:15 am
JW-who will you have to gripe about when Bush and Cheney are gone? That’s the problem with you snarky types, always looking backwards and complaining-take a Midol
Jacob-Why in God’s name should Palin allow the chatterers to dictate her vision-sure she needs to do interviews, but not with those that despise her. BTW-Gwen was a fair moderator.
October 3rd, 2008 at 5:29 am
The looking backwards is such BULLSHIT spin. I do hope you have heard of cause and effect. IE Palin was so abysmal in last nights debate that it makes you angry now.
I hear there’s teachers wanted at Oral Roberts University.
October 3rd, 2008 at 8:03 am
oh by no means am i saying she’s got to sit down and square off with olberman or anyone like that. but in all honesty, can you really say couric ‘despised’ her? there’s a reason they choose her as an interviewer, and that’s because she’s soft. and couric was soft with her, pailn’s implosion was self made. a follow up question is not out of bounds, it allows the interviewee to further clarify and describe their vision.
October 3rd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
JW-I got your Oral Robert right here!:)
-Palin should continue to define herself. We all know Katie hates her and was going for the “gotcha” in her passive aggressive way . They all hate her because she may be the first (repub) woman VP.
October 3rd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
“gotcha” journalism involves taking things out of their context and unfairly leveling them at the interviewee. if couric’s gotcha scheme was to get palin to show she doesn’t know supreme court cases, or can’t name one news source, or doesn’t understand the bailout… well mission accomplished.
if they do indeed hate her, i would hope it’s not just because she may be the 1st female VP but that also (adding to your last sentence) “she’s drastically unqualified.”
admit it… if palin were an old hag and not easy on the eyes, and if she gave all these same poor answers, you’d have jumped ship long ago.
October 3rd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
After some of those beauty pageant non answers I was expecting her to play the flute for the talent segment.
October 3rd, 2008 at 10:54 pm
“who will you have to gripe about when Bush and Cheney are gone? That’s the problem with you snarky types, always looking backwards and complaining”
You think we, that don’t agree with Palin/you, will not criticize ‘our’ candidates?
Wrong. I will admit when the left has screwed up.
I’ve issues with the whole thing but here we are again in the lesser of two evils vote.
By the way, Palin could’nt even handle being on the “View”.
This whole, “I’m just going to speak to the people” thing, is a way just to keep her stepford arse away from being completely exposed.
If she can’t handle it, she certainly should not be VP or more, as she wants.
Does she have any other setting but, “sparkly”?
October 4th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Jacob- I won’t jump ship-I always vote the Republican party line because I agree with the general philosophy, not necessarily each particular candidate. Have you ever voted Republican ?(I didn’t think so)
October 4th, 2008 at 11:30 am
god willing i never will :)
but there are options for republicans, bob barr is a strong libertarian candidate… fiscally conservative (for real) and anti-Iraq-occupation.
October 4th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
“who will you have to gripe about when Bush and Cheney are gone? That’s the problem with you snarky types, always looking backwards and complaining”
“:I always vote the Republican party line ”
so I assume you voted for GW (twice). Do you consider that to be a mistake?
if so, did you not learn anything for voting ‘party line’? If you refuse to look, even a few years back, and not make a any determination -that is just ____________(you fill in the blank)
if you don’t consider it a mistake you should be pretty happy now, in that you have a pretty good chance that we will get 4 to 8 more years of the same shit.
if Gore had won what could he have fucked up more than what has already happened
ideologues of any flavor can’t see anything beyond themselves
October 4th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
The Revolutionary War and the Civil war had naysayers. Lincoln and Washington both demonized for the “idealoque views”. The long view will tell. yeah-I’ll still vote Republican, just like you’ll probably still vote Democrat(even after Johnson,Carter,Clinton etc.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Good Show… Ian and Jacob, you brought most of the regulars into the conversation. As luck would have it, I get to follow Beetlejuice. I’ll get right to the point.
Say what any of us will about Palin, good or bad, here’s the point. All you need to know about her, character wise, is the fact that she accepted the offer to run for VICE PRESIDENT….. VICE ‘f-ing’ PRESIDENT of the United States of America. Are you kidding me, let’s get real.
The chances are better than good that any of you participating in this conversation have a more knowledge based grasp of world and domestic affairs than Palin does. And chances are better than good that none of you feel yourselves qualified to be Vice President. Anyone who, and there many, even highly educated people who try to rationalize here candidacy are just flat out cynical and disingenuous. ‘Country First’, my ass.
The same reflection on character goes for McCain. The fact that he ‘allowed’, her on the ticket is all that needs to be said. ‘Country First’, my ass. When I say allowed, I mean it. He bent over for someone and, I think it would be relevant to know for who.
October 5th, 2008 at 8:25 am
think you should read your history again. neither Lincoln nor Washington were ideologues but it doesn’t matter.
i would not vote for anyone who was such a fuck-up, no matter what party they belonged. how can you compare any of those presidents to all the shit GW has given us?
-2 lost wars w/ out a fore-seeable end
-erosion of the constitution
-economic collapse
-the beginnings of a police state
since both parties control the electoral process, there is no viable ‘other’ choice and I regret voting democrat (w/ the exception of Kucinich, who is diss-ed by his own party)
and you will vote for Palin-why?
October 5th, 2008 at 9:05 am
bb,
Good on ya……….. And if more people just calmed down and actually listened to depth of thought in what Kucinich has to say, we might be able to put more pressure on the Democratic party to get up and smell the coffee. Then in turn begin to slow the Fascist drift of our country.
October 5th, 2008 at 9:36 am
My first choice was Romney, but like I said I vote the party line (like all of you do) because of the general ideals of the party. I also think the dems share equal responsibility for economics, the war, and the patriot act, since they control congress.(and all of you on this thread voted for democrats, so you can take partial responsibility) too.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
‘equal responsibility’ is out of the question. it comes down to numbers…
1 republican executive branch (8 yrs) + 1 republican controlled congress (6 yrs) > democratic controlled congress (2 yrs).
yes many democrats vote for the things you listed, but lets get real here.
October 5th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
I don’t quite feel qualified to be vp but if I had to take it I would definitely bring back a West Coast Whitehouse(vp version)
Since Trestlse has been done I think Rincon will do. In my graciousness I would not close the point completely. It would now be classified Bonzer only, and to show open mindedness Hulls on Sunday’s.
We need change and the time has come. Does Love it or Leave it apply here.
