Dueling Turntables..Eno Related..Hector Zazou,”I’ll Strangle You”

well ok..the connection from this to Eno, and back, is direct.

this is from the late great Hector Zazous’ concept LP , based on the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud, that came out in 1992 called “Sahara Blue”.

amazing line up of musicians, including David Sylvian, John Cale, Bjork, Bill Laswell, Khaled..and others.

on this little ditty, spoken word is by Gerard Depardiu and vocals from Anneli Drecker.

the music on this cut is classic Bill Laswell..Material..stuff, a’ la late 80′s, early 90′s, NY urban, discordant, driving, and a bit unnerving.

some incredible efforts from Cale and Sylvian on this LP as well, lots of mood, lots of attitude, and a remarkable sense of perspective for time and place.

i dare say “ambient”.
in the truest sense of that term.

Zazou followed up in 94′ with another all star ensemble LP “Songs From the Cold Sea’s’ which damn near produced a single hit with a beautiful duo number from John Cale and Suzanne Vega called “the Long Voyage’.

these artist’s here are all of a piece.. different parts of the same puzzle, each inspiring and challenging the other to move forward in their creativity.

i hear a lot of Eno’s “Nerve Net ” in this particular tune…

and now, it’s your move Jman.

Lucinda Williams..Righteously, Live.

Not necessarily the best version/vocals by this amazing artist on this song.
But I love her, and especially her guitarist on this one.
It’s a gravel road.
And how many times do you hear..”just play me John Coltrane” in a song?
Follow the thread.

Transa Springtime Mix

77 minutes and 18 seconds of Springtime festivities here.  Music– the ultimate renewal.  Perfect CD-R length too, for the industrial types.  Some thoughts:

  • Damien Jurado has released one of 2012′s gems so far.  Score one for persistence!
  • Early to mid-20th century African-American gospel music has no real experiential reason to speak to me, but undeniably does.
  • Doo-Wop will always remind me of riding on a spring-less seat in a van.
  • Lambchop has also one of 2012′s keepers.
  • O Captain!  my Captain!  rise up and hear the bells.  We always will…
  • Out of Athens, GA — circa 1980 — The Method Actors were/are a frenetic unhinged joy.  A duo has no business sounding this huge.
  • Prince put together one shit-hot backing band with The Time.

Enjoy!

1. Damien Jurado – “Nothing Is the News”
2. The Magic I.D. – “Children’s Tale”
3. Arizona Dranes – “He Is My Story”
4. Edith Piaf – “Johnny, Tu N’es Pas Un Ange”
5. Johnny Otis – “Let’s Rock (Let’s Surf Awhile)”
6. Charles Mingus – “Boogie Stop Shuffle”
7. The Volumes – “Sandra”
8. Slim Harpo – “I Got Love If You Want It”
9. Jack De Johnette – “Jongo”
10. Lambchop – “Gar”
11. Jackson C. Frank – “Blues Run the Game”
12. Eyvind Kang – “Forest Sama’i”
13. Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band – “Moody Liz (Take 8)”
14. The Method Actors – “Do The Method”
15. Arthur Russell – “That’s Us / Wild Combination”
16. Maxmillion Dunbar – “Sno Mega”
17. The Time – “Get It Up”

Meher Baba..the Evolution of Consciousness

Somewhat heavy..a bit overbearing and didactic at times.
Nonetheless, good as a starting point, check out the “Discourses” material..and
listen to some selected Pete Townsend, Ronnie Lane, and Richard Thompson;
they have each expressed a musically lyrical and poetic point of view informed by Baba.
Hear it, read it, experience it, and get back to me if so inclined.
As for me,
I Am..
still working on it,
chopping wood,carrying water.
Pretty much no change.

Buzzy Kneubuhl

From Buzzy’s Paipo interview:

Many children growing up in Hawaii in the 1960s rode simple ply paipo – Buzzy was no different. He soon progressed onto riding stand-up at Ala Moana and other South shore spots. Later on Maui he windsurfed and more recently has been kitesurfing. He has again caught the paipo bug and speaks of his re-connecting with paipo boarding. The boards are no longer ply but the same stoke is experienced.

Read the entire interview HERE.

From Dr. Robert:

Buzzy Kneubuhl
a Real Human Being in the truest sense of the term;
a True Hawaiian in that same way.
Keeper of the Flame..
Surfing on with Peace and Aloha.
Thank you Buzzy!

Rest In Peace
